Aum Shinrikyō or Aum Supreme Truth (オウム真理教, Ōmu Shinrikyō), which became Aleph in 1999, is a cult primarily based in Japan and Russia. It was responsible for several criminal acts in Japan between 1989 and 1995. On March 20, 1995, the cult carried out a sarin gas attack on five crowded Tokyo subway trains, resulting in the deaths of 13 people and injuring more than 6,300 others.
